Our Artists Continue to Shine in the Community!

Here at the Salish Sea Market, we consider ourselves so very lucky to be in association with so many artists who are community focussed, using their enormous talents in support of a better world.

Today, we would like to celebrate three such artists, Janet McDonald, Esther Sample and Joshua Hansen

Janet McDonald, painter, says: I am a Frustrated Marine Biologist. Her love for the waters around us and the creatures in those waters, is as deep as the ocean itself. Here’s a little background:

When Janet thought about going to university, she always thought it would be to study marine biology. The dream had been in her head since childhood, and reinforced when she had a chance to swim with dolphins in Hawaii. Alas, when the time came to decide on a career path, she had convinced herself that she would end up “counting plankton in Northern Ontario” and not with her dream job of swimming with dolphins. And so, she chose a path of the arts and social work.

But that has never meant her love for sea life has diminished. Janet is a strong supporter of the Georgia Strait Alliance, and the work they do in protecting the coastal ocean life.

In support of our marine life, Janet donates 20% of her sales of all Orca prints, paintings and pillows to the Georgia Strait Alliance! Way to go Janet, and thank you for being a shining example of how art can be a catalyst for change!

Our next very bright light in the arts community is Esther Sample, painter of waves extrodinaire. We have recently heard she has been elevated to Signature Member status with American Women Artists!

Her certificate reads:

As an artist who has juried into three or more AWA National Juried Competitions, achieved considerable acclaim with your work, and established yourself as an artist of consistent excellence, you are now recognized as a Signature Member of American Women Artists. The Board of Directors of American Women Artists congratulates you on this significant honor and accomplishment.

We at the Salish Sea Market do too Esther!!  Congratulations and the honour is so very, very well deserved!

And the winner is ….

Congratulations to Joshua Hansen, the 2020/2021 winner of the Salmon Conservation Stamp Competition!

Joshua’s image, called Untouchable, “will adorn next year’s stamp required to retain salmon caught in west coast tidal waters. All proceeds from the sales of the stamp are returned to Pacific Salmon Foundation for salmon projects in BC and the Yukon”, as reported in BC Outdoors magazine.

Congratulations Joshua, from all of us at the Salish Sea Market and thank you for your contribution to the support of salmon projects  here on the coast!

By the way, Esther Sample was a winner of the stamp competition in 2012/2013, so we know Joshua is in excellent company!

Thank you to all artists who use their skills and talents to make our world a more beautiful, connected and protected place to be.

We’re here cheering you on!
